Blackpool Tops List Of Britons' Favourite UK Holiday Destinations

Blackpool Tops List Of Britons' Favourite UK Holiday Destinations

A summer survey found that Blackpool, famed for its illuminations and Pleasure Beach theme park, is the most popular holiday destination within the UK according to the British public. It narrowly beat Brighton and Whitby to the top spot.

Once the seaside town par excellence, Blackpool has long been associated with the great British summer holiday, offering the perfect getaway for all the family. In recent years however, Blackpool is more often associated with stag and hen parties than with family friendly breaks to the beach.

Despite this shift in perception, it seems that the location remains popular within the staycation category. Although the poll indicates that Blackpool is still a popular holiday destination, this is all relative to the over-riding increase in the affordability of and access to an ever-increasing number of foreign resorts and exotic locations. Blackpool has not retained its crown as a top holiday haven, it has simply managed to fend off domestic competition.

However, Blackpool does offer a pseudo-retrospective glimpse into times gone by. As a seaside town, it is better placed to retain that traditional British holiday atmosphere, albeit with nowhere near the same vibrancy and busyness as it may have been defined some 50-60 years ago – a sense demonstrated so well by a photo taken in 1948 of a segment of the over-crowded Blackpool beach and published in the Observer last month.

The survey, carried out by consumer organisation, Which? reported that 6.7% of 4,217 adults voted for Blackpool, whilst second place Brighton received 5.9% of the overall vote. It appeared that most pro-Blackpool voters were swayed in their decision by the impressive winter illuminations display – perhaps it is telling that the main attraction is one not associated with Blackpool in the summer.

Despite its dropping visitor numbers, Blackpool managed to draw in 1.38 million visitors in 2008, and remains within the top ten list of most-visited English towns as compiled by VisitEngland.com. It is unfair however, to view Blackpool as a decaying remnant of a bygone age. It remains an exciting seaside town, with theatres, shows and, when the weather permits, wonderful promenade strolls. In addition to this, Blackpool also boasts some of the most attractive luxury hotels in the UK, with splendid sea views and fantastic access to the main thoroughfare.

With the recent economic downturn having a direct effect on the holiday habits of many Brits, trips within the UK have become far more favourable now than in recent years. The survey found that 40% of UK adults ventured to the British seaside in 2009, with 20% admitting that they would be more likely to opt for a holiday at home this year than previously.

Greek Islands Holidays for a European Idyll

Greek Islands Holidays for a European Idyll

We’ve been brain washed a little, in recent years, into believing that idyllic holidays have to be far flung. The literature, the posters, the adverts all point to faraway destinations covered in waving palm fronds. Sun, they seem to suggest, is only available when one spends a fortune travelling halfway around the world. Anyone who has ever been on Greek islands holidays already knows the lunacy of that suggestion – for the rest of us, then, here’s a little run down of an idyll much closer to home.

The Greek islands have everything – including, at the moment, a rather wonderful habit of offering spectacular holidays at extremely reasonable prices. Sun, sand, sea, culture, ancient temples, glorious plant and wild life: everything that made the Aegean islands the cradle of romanticism, the place Shelley and Byron and all the great Romantic writers wanted to be in is still there in spades. Wonderful food, balmy nights, hot days (but not, unlike the tropics, swelteringly horrible and sticky) – there is nothing the heart desires that cannot be had in Greece and its surrounding islands.

Greek islands holidays can be done in one of two equally outstanding ways. One can either charter a yacht (this isn’t as expensive as its sounds) or hire a villa – or, if one wishes, one can combine the two, hiring a villa with access to a chartered and crewed yacht. All yacht charters are available either as bare boats (i.e. self crewed) or as crewed: if one wishes to hire a yacht bare one may well be asked to provide some proof of seamanship – a recognised license or qualification. To be honest, unless one is a seasoned sailor, the idea of Greek islands holidays on a bare boat is practically insane – why go to all that trouble when a whole professional crew is waiting to sail you around wherever you want to go, whenever you want to go there? Not forgetting, of course, that if someone else is in charge of the yacht then one is free to share a couple of bottles of retsina with one’s companion or, indeed, companions.

Villa hire is just as wonderful (which leads one to suppose that the ideal Greek island holiday would be to hire a villa with access to a yacht). Living for a couple of weeks in a Greek island villa allows one to step slowly back in time, wandering through explosions of fragrant plants in a genuine Mediterranean garden, relaxing for hours in a hammock under a cypress tree. Greek islands holidays, when they have a villa thrown in for good measure, are a positive study in the kind of indulgence tropical holidays often offer but so rarely deliver.

And all so close to home, too! With a Greek island holiday one can forget about 12 hour flights, interminable layovers and crushing jet lag. A couple of hours and one is there, in the bright blue Aegean Sea, ready to start the sensory adventure of a lifetime. Next time one of those posters for faraway lands crops up in your field of vision, stop and think for a minute. Wouldn’t it be better to take Greek islands holidays?

Campervan Hire As an Alternative to a Package Holiday

Campervan Hire As an Alternative to a Package Holiday

As fashion changes the idea of campervan hire as an alternative to a package holiday is getting more and more acceptable.

There are many things to recommend a campervan holiday, it is perhaps a way of living and relaxing that has perhaps only just been noticed by the main stream. It is and idea whose time has come.

The package holiday was a wonderful thing, but of its time, when the world was a much more civilized place, airports weren't places where you had to penetrate layers of security just to go on a two week holiday to sit in the sun in Spain. You weren't forced to take your shoes off or be subjected to a full body scan, it was a more innocent time, but that was then.

A campervan allows you to take the comforts of home with you, start the ignition and choose any direction you see fit, the cardinal points of the compass matter not and the continent is only a short train or ferry ride away.

The only time you'll be sat in front of a screaming baby is if you choose to take your own, not flight cancellations or over-booked tours. You only have to look at the Icelandic volcano disruption to realize the sense in being able to travel under your own steam and not at the whim of some dust-fearing officials at the Met office.

The world is unfortunately not the same as when the package holiday seemed like a good idea, but these days there is so much to be said for hiring a campervan it really is obvious why more an more people are taking to the road in this fashion.

There is no doubt that the idea of no fly holidays are going to get more and more popular as confidence in flying decreases. This explains why more and more people are choosing to hire a motorhome for their holidays.

Great beaches on the Isle of Wight

Great beaches on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a beautiful place, and there's a lot to do there. One of the things that's a favourite of travellers and tourists, though, is to go to the beach. If you're going to be spending a lot of time on the beach, Sandown is among the best choices. The beaches there are very beautiful and they are unspoiled in many ways, so walking along them can be quite an experience. The white sand is the main attraction, but there is a pier there, as well, with amusements. Adults and children alike can have fun on this boardwalk and still enjoy the unspoiled areas of beach. Breweries and many other things are on the Isle of Wight, too, which is also an English county.

There are more than one hundred and forty thousand people who call it home, but they will be happy to welcome you on your holiday adventure. The Isle of Wight has many unspoiled areas along with its beaches, and the countryside overall is amazing, so it's something that you shouldn't miss during your stay. Ocean ferries take you between the mainland and the Isle of Wight, so it's easy for you to get there with no work involved.

Once you get there, you can really relax, because Isle of Wight breaks are some of the best that the UK has to offer. The restaurants, the beaches, and the accommodations are not easy to forget, and they keep people coming back to the Isle of Wight again and again, no matter how many times they've already been to a particular area or seen a particular attraction - and that's especially true of the beaches. Many places have nice beaches, but the area near Sandown, with all of that white sand, is really exquisite. People love to come there with their special someone, with their children, or just with their family or friends. Some come alone, just to be part of nature and at peace for a little while. There are so many miles of coastline and beach that you can get the solitude that you crave or you can spend time with others. The choice is really up to you, and the Isle of Wight offers you both options. It's a great way to keep visitors interested in the area and keep them coming back for more of the beauty of the Isle of Wight each time they take a holiday.

Holidays may not have to be limited to summer because of the vagaries of the English weather. Imagine yourself, with or without the kids, not having to face the traffic jams, the stress and the hordes of tourists. Luxury holiday cottages will have all the home comforts from cooker and fridge to TV and often DVD player. Many come with off-road parking for your car's security. Quite often pets are welcome too. No more kennel boarding fees adding to the cost of a holiday.

Adventure Holidays – Bungee off Verzasca Dam or climb Mount Kosciuszko

Adventure Holidays – Bungee off Verzasca Dam or climb Mount Kosciuszko

The race to the poles has been won and the seven seas and five continents have been mapped and plundered but the human hunger for adventure isn’t sated. While some people still crave virgin exploration, there are a lot of people who’d prefer something more achievable – an Adventure Holiday. On an adventure holiday you will have to work to achieve your goal, but you don't have to risk death or frostbite to get there and you can be there in back in two weeks.

Explorers used to look upwards for adventure. Everest took some conquering, and Mont Blanc’s snows have made a worthy adversary in the past. But Kilimanjaro was recently conquered by a bunch of celebrities for Comic Relief, and the impressively titled highest mountains in the United Kingdom and Australia: Ben Nevis and Mount Kosciuszko, are ideal for a short holiday adventure. Ben you can summit in about nine hours, Kosciuszko you can do in about three – and during your Adventure Holiday you'll have climbed one of the ‘Seven Summits’.

Sailors are some of the world's great adventurers, setting off to discover a new land is pretty adventurous, but that kind of epic journey doesn't fit into your time off work. But those who crave the open promises of the sea can still experience life on a tall ship, or attempt to sail round Cape Horn – or for the Adventure Holiday version charter a boat and bob round Scotland’s western coast. Or take your adventure holiday time completing the Three Peaks Yacht Race – still an impressive achievement.

No one has ever ventured 2,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but the underwater world has set challenges for man, with both its creatures of the deep and its depths – conquer them in adventure holiday comfort by diving with Great White Sharks, or the less teeth-y whale sharks or dolphins, or take a submarine safari to the depths on your next adventure holiday to the Spanish sun.

If you’re in the market to prove yourself on your adventure holiday there are still plenty of ways to come of age in traditionally challenging style. Young men on Pentecost Island proved themselves with a bungee jump of faith, and while you could travel there to perform with the traditional vines etc. it would be much more exciting and impressive to come of age in the same kind of way James Bond would have – not with Miss Moneypenny – but by repeating the Bond bungee from Goldeneye off Verzasca Dam.

China’s Great Wall is an adventure holiday and historic hike, but you can now get up to the wall via cable car and down via toboggan. Instead of racing to the pole you can witness the wilds of Antarctica from the deck of your cruise ship, and the Arctic though the window of your train, and instead of joining a Tureg Salt Caravan you can opt to camp in five star luxury at Ksar Ghilane in the Sahara. Running with the Bulls is kind of adventure holiday bullfighting lite, though still pretty dangerous…

Phillip Island Australia – Activities

Phillip Island Australia – Activities

Located about one hundred and forty kilometers from Melbourne, this island is named after South Wales' first governor Arthur Philip. Its area is approximated to be ten thousand hectares, and it is also twenty six kilometers long besides being nine kilometers wide. Besides being part of the Bass coastline, Phillips Island is known to have a ninety seven kilometer coastline as well. A town in the island, Newhaven, is connected to another mainland town, San Remo, by a six hundred and forty kilometer concrete bridge. Other than being a farmland, the island is also devoted to grazing of sheep and cattle.

It might appear quite small, but this island is known for its vibrant tourism sector, one which has been known to attract over three million tourists each year. The most notable of the attractions happens to be the island's nature park, where little penguins are usually seen coming ashore in groups. This is one of the few areas in the world where a certain species of penguins can be seen. Interestingly enough, the small island is known to be home to the largest colony of fur seals in Australia, and they as well form another popular tourist destination site known as the seal rocks. The seals are estimated to total to about sixteen thousand.

Most wildlife parks in the world will not allow the feeding of wild animals by hand, let alone freely mingling with them. But in this Island visitors to a wildlife park are allowed to do all the aforementioned while getting up close to some of the diverse types of wildlife available such as kangaroos, reptiles, birds of prey among other lots of Australian species of animals. In Australia itself as a whole, it is only Phillips Island which is known to have some of the most varied and consistently reliable surf conditions. Every year the island also play host to a new years eve festival, the Pyramid rock festival.

The Australian motor racing history can never be acknowledged without having to mention this island considering that a circuit which composed of its interior roads was used for the renown Australian grand prix back in the year nineteen ninety twenty eight. The circuit continued being operational up to nineteen thirty five. It was not until the year nineteen sixty that the Armstrong 500 racing event was held in the island. Two years later during the same event, the bridge connecting to the mainland broke after the third run owing to the fact that it could not support the heavy hotmix bitumen that had been used to construct the tracks.

The circuit was closed in the nineteen seventies, before being re-developed and then being re-opened in nineteen eighty nine when it was used as the venue for the first international version of an Australian Motorcycle Grand prix. Ocean breezes are the ones known to temper Philips Island, with the maximum mean temperatures for February standing at twenty four point seven degrees Celsius. A strange happening took place on the island on the tenth of August when snow was observed as that was something which had never been seen on Phillip Island before.

The Crown of Menorca

The Crown of Menorca

Standing at just 358m metres high on a hill, on top of Menorca, Monte Toro is the islands beacon. It is said that the Menorcans have always felt a special attraction for this mountain, to such an extent that they made it into the island's spiritual centre. The Monte Toro is located in the centre of Menorca, in the district of Es Mercadal and is half way between Mao and Ciutadella. It is the highest point on the island; this is the only place where an aerial view of the countryside can be viewed. Early settlers had built a watchtower to overlook the area and the present day watch tower was built much later, in 1558.

At the peak of Monte Toro there is a sanctuary that was built in the 17th century; this was done to replace an Gothic one that was built earlier. Today the sanctuary is inhabited by a sisterhood of nuns. The entrance of the sanctuary has a courtyard which is home to monument that recalls the Menorcans who moved to Florida in the 18th Century.

The church safeguards an unusual door that has two clock faces and two giant bow. The inside of the church has a single nave, with three chapels at each side. In one of them is the cave that if you believe the legend is where they discovered the statue of the Virgin of El Toro, the patron saint of the Menorcans.

Outside of the building you can see that the influence of Spiritual nature around it. As there are two more monuments, the Sagrado Corazon (Sacred Heart) and one that commemorates people who immigrated to Algeria. From here the best panoramic view of the whole island can be seen you can see the growth of nature in the north coast, the warmth of the south coast and if the weather is clear then it is possible to see the western coast of Mallorca. Also this location isn't bad for seeing the sunrise or set, I don't think you find a better location on the island as there will be nothing obstructing your view.

At the bottom of Monte Toro is Es Mercadal, this is a bustling photographic town with whitewashed houses, these are ideal
Menorca villas which have narrow streets. This is the complete opposite from the tranquil nature of the church on Monte Toro. Es Mercadal is known for its Gastronomy and there are a wide range of restaurants which cater to all your needs with their distinct special dishes. They range from the caldereta which is a fish stew and the calamares a la menorquina which is Menorcan style squid dish. To get to Monte Toro from Es Mercadal is easy as it is a 3km journey up a road which leads to the summit, there you will find a car park and a small bar so there will be a reason to take a car if possible. There shouldn't be any reason why you wouldn't want to go as not only will you have the best view of the island but you'll also be able to relax in peace.
