Phillip Island Australia – Activities

Phillip Island Australia – Activities

Located about one hundred and forty kilometers from Melbourne, this island is named after South Wales' first governor Arthur Philip. Its area is approximated to be ten thousand hectares, and it is also twenty six kilometers long besides being nine kilometers wide. Besides being part of the Bass coastline, Phillips Island is known to have a ninety seven kilometer coastline as well. A town in the island, Newhaven, is connected to another mainland town, San Remo, by a six hundred and forty kilometer concrete bridge. Other than being a farmland, the island is also devoted to grazing of sheep and cattle.

It might appear quite small, but this island is known for its vibrant tourism sector, one which has been known to attract over three million tourists each year. The most notable of the attractions happens to be the island's nature park, where little penguins are usually seen coming ashore in groups. This is one of the few areas in the world where a certain species of penguins can be seen. Interestingly enough, the small island is known to be home to the largest colony of fur seals in Australia, and they as well form another popular tourist destination site known as the seal rocks. The seals are estimated to total to about sixteen thousand.

Most wildlife parks in the world will not allow the feeding of wild animals by hand, let alone freely mingling with them. But in this Island visitors to a wildlife park are allowed to do all the aforementioned while getting up close to some of the diverse types of wildlife available such as kangaroos, reptiles, birds of prey among other lots of Australian species of animals. In Australia itself as a whole, it is only Phillips Island which is known to have some of the most varied and consistently reliable surf conditions. Every year the island also play host to a new years eve festival, the Pyramid rock festival.

The Australian motor racing history can never be acknowledged without having to mention this island considering that a circuit which composed of its interior roads was used for the renown Australian grand prix back in the year nineteen ninety twenty eight. The circuit continued being operational up to nineteen thirty five. It was not until the year nineteen sixty that the Armstrong 500 racing event was held in the island. Two years later during the same event, the bridge connecting to the mainland broke after the third run owing to the fact that it could not support the heavy hotmix bitumen that had been used to construct the tracks.

The circuit was closed in the nineteen seventies, before being re-developed and then being re-opened in nineteen eighty nine when it was used as the venue for the first international version of an Australian Motorcycle Grand prix. Ocean breezes are the ones known to temper Philips Island, with the maximum mean temperatures for February standing at twenty four point seven degrees Celsius. A strange happening took place on the island on the tenth of August when snow was observed as that was something which had never been seen on Phillip Island before.
