Holidays in Playa Flamenca, Orihuela Costa, Valencia, Spain

Holidays in Playa Flamenca, Orihuela Costa, Valencia, Spain

Playa Flamenca is a residential beach area on the Orihuela Costa. Before 1972 it was just a quiet stretch of relatively unknown coastline until some Flemish real estate developers sowed the seeds for what is now one of most well sought for popular resorts.

Playa Flamenca has a beautiful sanded beach area overlooked by a palm-lined promenade that stretches around the cliff face. It has showers and toilets, a game zone and a public telephone. Though, most importantly it is Blue Flagged – the estimable European award for beaches that not only offer cleanliness but also show an active interest in environment friendliness. The promenade also stretches to the other beach resorts of Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Punta Prima before finally arriving at Campoamor.

There are a host of activities offered here or nearby, mainly water sports and maritime but there is some equestrian and relaxing sports such as fishing and golf. In fact golf is well accommodated with three splendid courses in the area: Villamartin, Campoamor and Las Ramblas. Villamartin is ideal for amateurs and professionals alike and has been used for the European Challenge PGA Tour a couple of times. Campoamor actually has three 18-hole courses and its reputation carries the royal standard with it. Finally, Las Ramblas has views that stretch over the majesty of the Mediterranean Sea.

Playa Flamenca has a market every Saturday and it is an ideal time to fill in that gift list as it sells many things such as clothing, accessories, flowers and food items. You can also top up at the many shops at the Playa Flamenca commercial centre. In this centre there are also many bars and restaurants that can offer traditional Spanish food as well as other European specialities.

If you have time for a little culture then a visit to Murcia and Cartagena are wonderful illustrations to Spain's historic contributions to European history. In the old town of Orihuela there are also six old buildings noted as having Cultural Heritage and the town itself was declared a historic and artistic monumental area in the late sixties. La Mata and Torrevieja offer mud baths, which reportedly have therapeutic qualities.

To enjoy this beautiful stretch of beach area with its own unique micro-climate that keeps the hottest months bearable and the coldest mild, then you will need to fly into San Javier at Murcia or El Altet in Alicante. Transfer arrangements will be better provisioned at Alicante but it is worth considering flights and transfers costs in any online assessment of your holiday arrangements. If you book ahead then it will give you an idea of the most affordable and most convenient route. Shuttle services and car hire can be booked in advance and if you do fly into Murcia then taxis are going to be more affordable.

There are no hotels in Playa Flamenca but there are plenty of holiday villas, which can be tailored around your own requirements. Some of them are quite luxurious with outdoor swimming pools.

The Author, Phil Hanlon, writes for Holiday Home Rentals who have a selection of Apartments in Playa Flamenca and Villas in Playa Flamenca which can be rented direct from their owners.
